PUBLIC WORKS:
Daily Operations & Maintenance:
On a year round basis, Presque Isle Public Works maintains 116 miles of paved streets and roads. 10.6 miles of gravel roads, 23 miles of sidewalks, and all City-owned public parking lots. Added to this mix, we plow an additional 21 miles of State and State Aid roadways in the winter months.
During the summer we perform maintenance on some of our 126 street and roadway miles and 23 miles of sidewalks. Summer maintenance includes paving, chip sealing, brush cutting, and roadside mowing. We also maintain two boat landings and seven watershed dams located on tributaries of the Presque Isle Stream.
Our crew replaces signs as needed, performs culvert repair and/or replacement, catch basin repair and replacement, and cleans and regrades ditches to ensure proper drainage. The City crew also performs street washing, sweeping, and patching of pot holes. We also construct street, road and sidewalk construction and rehabilitation.
Our fleet of equipment and tools requires regular maintenance, all or which is done in our own shop.
During the winter months, the Public Works crew is on call 24 hours, seven days a week from December 1st through April 1st.
Most of the winter months are spent keeping parking lots, sidewalks and traveled roadways open and safe for the public. The plowing mileage is broken into nine runs, each run takes approximately 3-3 1/2 hours to complete. The City uses a mixture of salt and liquid calcium chloride for slippery conditions and ice control on City Street. Approximately 6,000 cubic yards of sand/salt mixture is used for country roads.
The Public Works Division issues street opening permits, curb cut permits, and heavy load limit permits, at no cost to our residents. Please contact us for more information.
Our 14-member crew consists of: 1-Director, 1-Foreman, 1-Administrative Assistant, 2-Equipment Operators, 7 Truck Drivers, and 2-Mechanics.
