City of Presque Isle, Maine

BalloonsThere is a place, closer to your front door than you could ever imagine, where every season becomes the season of possibility. A place where new, innovative ideas are always encouraged; where citizens speak of community pride and ownership; and where government is a partnership of neighbor helping neighbor.  That place is Presque Isle, Maine.

The City of Presque Isle is home to approximately 8,797 residents (2020 Census) and is located in the central portion of Aroostook County in northern Maine. The City offers a full range of municipal services unequaled for a similar sized community in the State of Maine. Presque Isle has evolved into a regional service center for commerce, business, education, healthcare, air transportation and recreation.

Situated 42 miles from Interstate 95, Presque Isle is accessed by U. S. Route 1, six state routes, rail and the Northern Maine International Airport. The airport provides for daily scheduled air service and general aviation services.

Presque Isle is governed by a seven-member City Council elected at large from within the 75.2 square miles of the community. The City is managed by an appointed City Manager.

The City is home to two colleges: University of Maine at Presque Isle and Northern Maine Community College. PreK through grade twelve education is provided by the nationally recognized Maine School Administrative District (M.S.A.D.) #1. Medical services are provided by Northern Light A.R. Gould Hospital, serving regional medical needs. The City owns and operates its own industrial park, providing economic development opportunities for the region. The community is wired with wideband fiber optics.

Presque Isle’s vision of the future and ability to adapt to change have created a vibrant, dynamic community.  But never far from their rich historic past, Presque Isle citizens also have a deep respect for the tradition that brought people to this community more than 150 years ago.  That tradition includes involvement in the community, a strong desire to protect historic landmarks while maintaining a vibrant downtown and a deep desire to preserve the natural beauty of Presque Isle.

These are the reasons that Presque Isle residents, businesses and tourists find Presque Isle such an appealing place to live, work and visit.

Presque Isle is an Age-Friendly Community

AARP’s website indicates that “Membership in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities means that a community’s elected leadership has made a commitment to actively work with residents and local advocates to make their town, city, county or state an age-friendly place to live.”   This is definitely a goal embraced by the City of Presque Isle and its elected leaders especially in light of the fact that Presque Isle has a higher percentage of those 65 and older than the State of Maine and the United States as a whole as well as an older housing stock.  As a result, in May of 2018, the City of Presque Isle was designated an Age-Friendly Community by AARP Maine.

The philosophy is quite simple.  The mission of Age-Friendly Presque Isle is to promote healthy aging in our community; and to keep city officials informed of the needs of older adults living and aging in the community.   The vision for Presque Isle is to be a healthy, livable community for residents of all ages.
